A Tribute to Charlie – The Music of Karlheinz Miklin | Concert at Tube's

Karlheinz Miklin, who passed away prematurely in 2019, was not only a pioneering figure in Austrian jazz but also an internationally respected musician. Through decades of collaboration with renowned artists from around the world, he gained recognition far beyond Austria. The magazine Jazzthing included him among its "European Jazz Legends", while the Karlheinz Miklin Trio is featured in Peter von Bartkowski's family tree of European jazz.

On 3 November 2026, the saxophonist, affectionately known as Charlie to friends and colleagues, would have celebrated his 80th birthday. To mark this occasion, his son Karlheinz Miklin Jr., who performed alongside his father as a drummer for more than 20 years, has brought together a special ensemble to honour his father's life and music.
All six musicians are internationally acclaimed artists who shared personal or professional connections with Karlheinz Miklin.

Pianist Olaf Polziehn (Germany) and bassist Morten Ramsbøl (Denmark) were not only fellow professors at the University of Music and Performing Arts Graz but also toured with Miklin in various ensembles, often as a quartet with Miklin Jr. on drums. Miklin met American trombonist Luis Bonilla in Grožnjan, Croatia, where a lasting friendship developed. The two planned to form a quartet with Ramsbøl and Miklin Jr., but Miklin's sudden death prevented their scheduled debut performance.

Austrian saxophonist Herwig Gradischnig was once Miklin's student in Graz. He subsequently continued his career in Linz and became one of Austria's leading saxophonists, maintaining his connection with his former teacher.

Trumpeter Gerhard Ornig (Austria), around 20 years younger than the other musicians, represents the next generation influenced by Miklin's long-standing teaching career at the University of Music and Performing Arts Graz, where he also served as head of department for 17 years, and his involvement in the International Association of Schools of Jazz.

Today one of Europe's leading young trumpeters, Ornig began his studies in Graz before continuing his education in Amsterdam and New York. He later returned to Graz and performed with the Jazzorchester Steiermark, with which Miklin recorded his compositions in arrangements by Michael Abene in 2016. Miklin also invited Ornig to perform with his sextet on several occasions.

Together, the six musicians will present compositions from every period of Miklin's career, performing in different line-ups with personal interpretations and often new arrangements.
"A Tribute to Charlie" is a musical tribute to Karlheinz Miklin, celebrating his artistic legacy and the personal connections he established throughout his life.
