Theresa Obermayer: The Suburbs – STAGES

With STAGES, HALLE FÜR KUNST Steiermark has created a format that provides young and emerging artists from Graz and Styria with a space to present their work.

In this edition, Theresa Obermayer explores the suburbs as a fantasy, a projection and a life goal – a promise of security and an orderly life. What initially appears idyllic reveals its comfortable yet unsettling undercurrents upon closer inspection: while cleanliness and order define the façade, life unfolds behind closed doors and curtained windows.

Obermayer aims to introduce disorder into this carefully arranged tranquillity. Her works transform, reinterpret and rearrange the building blocks of suburban life. A remix of what already exists, raising questions and juxtaposing the familiar with the unfamiliar. After all, not everything is as it seems.

If Katherine Bernhardt represents the city, Obermayer's exhibition in the foyer can be seen geographically as the suburbs – a painterly introduction to the main exhibition. The two are connected by the colours of their works and a shared interest in depicting everyday objects and familiar elements in unexpected new contexts.

Theresa Obermayer's presentation opens with an artist talk on 19 November 2026 at 6 pm and will be on display at HALLE FÜR KUNST until 29 November 2026.
