Kalvarienberg CALVARY HILL

The Graz Kalvarienberg (calvary) is the most important and largest scenic portrayal of the Passion of Christ in the open air next to the river Mur.

On the Stations of the Cross, but still right – that’s you when you visit Calvary Hill in Graz, on the Austein.

The Austein is, next to the Schlossberg, the second mountain-like hill in Graz, outside the city centre. The most important and largest open-air scenic portrayal of the Passion of Christ has been reconstructed here.

Good to know

Kalvarienberg is located in the Lend district of Graz at Kalvarienbergstraße 155. The historic site is situated on the Austein, a prominent rock formation above the Mur River, and can be easily reached from the city centre by public transport (tram lines 1, 3, 6, or 7 to the Roseggerhaus stop, then transfer to bus line 67 to the Schippingerstraße stop)

Kalvarienberg, located on the Austein, is one of Graz’s most impressive religious landmarks. It is especially famous for its monumental group of crucifixion sculptures, which has attracted pilgrims and visitors for centuries. The site is regarded as the most significant and largest scenic depiction of the Passion of Christ in an outdoor setting along the Mur River.

Yes, Kalvarienberg is considered one of Graz’s lesser-known cultural sites and is often regarded as a hidden gem. This historic pilgrimage site combines history, architecture, and nature, offering a different perspective on Graz than the city’s well-known attractions in the historic centre.
