Short Cuts | Concert at Tube's presented by [open music]
Saxophonist and clarinettist Ned Rothenberg, pianist Sylvie Courvoisier and drummer Nasheet Waits are three of New York's leading improvisers of the past three decades. Together, they have formed Short Cuts, a collectively led trio influenced by the progressive jazz tradition of Ornette Coleman and John Zorn, as well as contemporary chamber music and cross-cultural musical approaches.
Moving between experimental sound exploration, rhythmic flexibility and lyrical clarity, the trio creates a musical dialogue that maintains a remarkably coherent internal structure, even during free improvisation. The absence of a bass instrument in this unusual line-up allows greater harmonic freedom, spontaneous interaction and flexible soundscapes.
Delicate textures, dynamic rhythms and energetic outbursts combine to create a multifaceted musical experience that defies stylistic categorisation – intense, surprising and characterised by exceptional artistic maturity.
As Courvoisier says of Rothenberg and Waits: "They are such beautiful players, and they both love grooves, even in a freely improvised setting. … And these guys love to take risks, like I do."
Three masters of their craft come together for their first European tour, performing in Graz for the first time as part of [open music].
