La Bohème – Giacomo Puccini | Opera Graz
A tale of bitter cold, passionate love and heartbreaking tragedy. Following The Tales of Hoffmann, director Tobias Ribitzki once again turns his attention to an opera that places artistic life and creativity at its centre. Ensemble members Corina Koller (Mimì) and Pavel Petrov (Rodolfo) portray one of opera’s most iconic love stories, while Chief Conductor Vassilis Christopoulos explores both the exuberance and the dramatic intensity of Puccini’s score.
The poet Rodolfo lives entirely for his art despite constant financial hardship. When he meets the equally impoverished Mimì, a passionate love affair begins and becomes the source of his inspiration. Yet with love comes harsh reality: Mimì is gravely ill. The carefree life of the bohemians and the merciless truth of everyday existence collide in an irreconcilable conflict.
With his fourth opera, Puccini created a timeless monument to the bohemian lifestyle. Based on Henri Murger’s Scènes de la vie de bohème, the work moves seamlessly between intimate moments and grand ensemble scenes. Tobias Ribitzki interprets this masterpiece through evocative imagery as a reflection on the uncompromising nature of the artistic life and a love that cannot ultimately overcome it.
Opera in four scenes (1896)
Libretto by Giuseppe Giacosa and Luigi Illica, with contributions by Giulio Ricordi and Giacomo Puccini, based on Henri Murger’s Scènes de la vie de bohème (1845–1851) and the play La Vie de bohème (1849) by Henri Murger and Théodore Barrière.
Performed in Italian with German surtitles.
