Frédérique Cournoyer Lessard - SCUSE
Frédérique Cournoyer Lessard has performed internationally with renowned Canadian companies such as The 7 Fingers and Cirque Éloize, and has also made a name for herself as a filmmaker. In 2021, she created her first stage production, SCUSE—a pioneering work of what is known as “documentary circus” in Quebec.
In SCUSE, Frédérique combines informal conversations with acrobatic scenes, drawing on fragments of her own childhood and youth that shaped her perception of femininity and sexuality. In close symbiosis with an aerial hoop, Frédérique explores how binary patterns of upbringing shape power dynamics in the adult world.
From six autobiographical moments—such as a casual comment in the schoolyard, a remark by her mother about Frédérique’s first name, a Spice Girls pop song, and a whispered comment from a coach—an evocative mosaic emerges about the subtle mechanisms of social conditioning.
