Two young couples head over heels in love, a bet on fidelity, an experiment! Director Barbara-David Brüesch brings one of Mozart’s most famous operas into the present day and examines the work’s relevance today. The musical direction is in the hands of Dinis Sousa, whose last-minute takeover of the baton for Berlioz’s *Les Troyens* at the 2023 Salzburg Festival caused a sensation.
It is a bold claim that Don Alfonso puts forward: supposedly, no woman can be faithful. Guglielmo and Ferrando are outraged, as they are absolutely certain of the fidelity of their partners, Fiordiligi and Dorabella. Without hesitation, they agree to an experiment: a staged test of fidelity involving all manner of madness, disguises and confusion. Starting off light-hearted and humorous, the plot thickens and, despite the apparent happy ending, leads to profound emotional wounds and an irreversible realisation on the part of the couples.
The creation of *Così fan tutte*, Mozart’s third brilliant collaboration with the librettist Lorenzo Da Ponte, is owed to Emperor Joseph II, who commissioned the work. The subject matter of the dramma giocoso is shrouded in a story that, whilst falling into the realm of legend, nevertheless held up a mirror to the society of the time. It was said that the tale of the partner-swapping had actually taken place shortly before at a Viennese carnival ball. Moralised interpretations and misinterpretations shaped the reception of the work in the 19th and 20th centuries. Finally recognised for its true greatness and significance, Così fan tutte has become one of the most frequently performed operas of all time. With musical mastery, Mozart subverts the questionable test of fidelity and paints a grand portrait of the soul that reveals the depth of genuine emotions.
