Kasematten Stage

The Kasematten Stage is located in the ruinous twostorey basement of the former Castellan’s Building of the Schlossberg fortress. This building was erected in the former moat around 1578, with the basement vaults used to store supplies. In 1783, the fortress was converted into a state prison, and male and female felons were imprisoned in the entire complex under extremely harsh conditions. The Castellan’s Building fell prey to the razing of the fortress in 1809. Its ruins have been used for cultural purposes since the 1930s. The actual open-air stage, which is refer¬red to as ‘casemate’, opened in 1937 and has been equipped with a movable roof since 1987.
