The Third Fortress Gate
The third fortress gate on Graz’s Schlossberg led to the “Katze” area near today’s Chinese Pavilion. It was blown up in 1809.
This is where the so-called third fortress gate was located. It led to the fortified area known as the “Cat”, situated on the elevated site of what is now the Chinese Pavilion.
As part of the expansion of the Renaissance fortress from 1544 onwards, officers’ quarters were built here, amongst other things. In the 18th century, accommodation for prison guards was also added. Right next to the gate, an older semi-circular wall tower had been incorporated into the new fortification wall. The recess in the preserved foundation is now used as a lookout with seating.
When the fortress was demolished following the Treaty of Schönbrunn in 1809, the buildings and fortifications of the “Cat” and the third fortress gate were blown up.
