Main Gate

The former main gate of the Renaissance fortress on Graz’s Schlossberg was blown up in 1809. Discover the history of this historic site.

The main gate of the Renaissance fortress on the Schlossberg used to stand on this spot. From Karmeliterplatz, which had been situated within Graz’s city walls since the completion of the outer Paulustor in 1616, there was a road leading to the gate which is still in use today.

The heavily fortified and secured gate complex, comprising the deputy commander’s house and accommodation for sentries, led into the lower fortress, which housed the sutlery, the smithy and the striking Clock Tower.

The Treaty of Schönbrunn sealed the building’s fate: In 1809, French sappers blew up the main gate as part of the demolition of the fortress. Although parts of the gateway arch remained standing at first, the ruins were soon completely cleared away.
