St. Barbara’s Branches at the Glockenspielplatz Advent Market
Discover a cherished Advent tradition in the heart of Graz’s Old Town
On 4 December, St. Barbara’s Day, the Advent market on Glockenspielplatz celebrates a special Christmas tradition: preparing and tying St. Barbara’s branches.
According to tradition, branches from fruit trees, often cherry trees, are cut on St. Barbara’s Day and placed in water. If they blossom by Christmas, they are considered a symbol of good luck and hope for the coming year.
At the Glockenspielplatz Advent market, visitors can discover this age-old custom and experience a piece of traditional Advent culture. Local handicrafts and Styrian traditions add to the festive atmosphere.
