Peter Protschka Quintet feat. Rick Margitza

Peter Protschka Quintet feat. Rick Margitza | Concert at Tube's

The Peter Protschka Quintet is a well-established working band that has toured extensively throughout Europe every year since 2013. With countless club performances, festival appearances and thousands of kilometres travelled together, the musicians share a close musical connection. United by friendship and a passion for jazz, they continually challenge one another and explore new musical directions.

The quintet continues to feature legendary tenor saxophonist Rick Margitza, a distinctive voice of New York's post-bop movement of the late 1980s, who has been based in Paris for around 20 years.

Margitza's impressive career includes collaborations with some of the greatest names in jazz. In 1988, Miles Davis invited him to join his European tour, and Margitza subsequently recorded three albums with him: Amandla, Live Around the World and Live in Montreux. He went on to release several albums under his own name on the renowned Blue Note label.

He has also performed with Eddie Gomez, Tony Williams, McCoy Tyner and Chick Corea, as well as the acclaimed jazz orchestras of American big-band composers Maria Schneider and John Fedchock and numerous leading European ensembles. His playing, combining powerful energy with lyrical expression, remains highly regarded internationally.

The quintet also features outstanding European jazz musicians Andreas Feith on piano, Martin Gjakonovski on double bass and Tobias Backhaus on drums.

The band's programme consists entirely of original compositions rooted in the post-bop tradition, combining poetic expression with rhythmic energy and musical spontaneity.

Following the live album Twilight Jamboree (2015), the quintet released its first studio album, Hearts and Minds, on Challenge International in spring 2022. The album received enthusiastic reviews from the international music press.
