Neue Hofkapelle - Welt, gute Nacht
Date: 5 March 2027, 8 pm
Venue: Mariahilferkirche, Graz
To venture courageously into the unknown, free from the fear of losing what is familiar – perhaps therein lies the greatest freedom. Few composers knew how to express the longing for a distant, heavenly world and the release from life’s burdens in music as profoundly as Johann Sebastian Bach.
Today, in our part of the world, we tend to avoid thinking about the finite nature of human existence. Against the suppression of death or the loss of one’s own significance, the liberated “Ich habe genug” (“I have enough”) from the cantata of the same name has an almost magical effect. Deeply moving are the words “Schlummert ein, ihr matten Augen, fallet sanft und selig zu” in the interpretation of Matthias Helm, who shares this music with us from the heart.
