When Wilhelm Busch’s razor-sharp irony meets Georg Philipp Telemann’s musical humour, it is not only Johannes Silberschneider and the Neue Hofkapelle who have fun – the audience can look forward to an entertaining evening as well.
The musical free spirit Telemann continued the long tradition of the scherzi musicali, which provided a strong counterpoint to settings of the Passion and tragedy or to ceremonial music. In his Burlesque de Quixotte, for example, he audibly sends the unfortunate hero into battle against windmills and sets many another folly to music.
Musical seriousness did not always take itself as seriously as it sometimes seems today. Or, to quote Wilhelm Busch: “Man is free as long as he wants what he must.” And nothing is quite as liberating as a hearty laugh!
