Lew Tabackin Trio | Concert at Tube's
American jazz musician Lew Tabackin is renowned for his distinctive tenor saxophone style. His playing is characterised by wide interval leaps, sudden changes in mood and tempo, and intense expression, demonstrating the full melodic, rhythmic and dynamic range of his instrument.
Tabackin began playing the flute and later the tenor saxophone while attending school in his hometown of Philadelphia. He studied at the Philadelphia Conservatory of Music, graduating with a degree in flute performance. Throughout his career, he has worked with renowned musicians including Don Friedman, Elvin Jones, Maynard Ferguson, Joe Henderson and the Thad Jones–Mel Lewis Orchestra.
Together with jazz pianist and composer Toshiko Akiyoshi, whom he later married, Tabackin founded the award-winning Toshiko Akiyoshi–Lew Tabackin Jazz Orchestra. He has also gained international recognition as a flautist, winning numerous critics' and readers' polls in DownBeat magazine and receiving several Grammy nominations.
For his two concerts at Tube's, Tabackin will be joined by two accomplished musicians. Bassist Boris Kozlov is particularly well known for his decades of work with New York's Mingus Big Band. Drummer Gasper Bertoncelj has performed with numerous international bandleaders and contributed to a wide range of recording sessions.
