A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens | Guest Performance in English at Schauspielhaus Graz
A Christmas Carol, written by English author Charles Dickens and first published in 1843, is one of the world's best-known Christmas stories. It tells the story of the profound transformation of the miserly and bitter Ebenezer Scrooge, who discovers the true meaning of compassion, generosity and humanity through encounters with three Christmas spirits. Scrooge is a hard-hearted businessman who despises Christmas. He shows little consideration for his poorly paid employee Bob Cratchit, rejects his nephew Fred's invitation to Christmas dinner and refuses to donate money to those in need.
On Christmas Eve, the ghost of his deceased business partner Jacob Marley appears to warn him of a life filled with regret. Three more spirits then take Scrooge on a journey through his past, present and a possible future. He revisits memories of his lonely childhood, witnesses families celebrating Christmas with joy despite their poverty and is finally confronted with his own death. These encounters profoundly change Scrooge. Realising his mistakes, he opens his heart and decides to turn his life around. He helps those in need, treats his employee with generosity and finally discovers the true joy of Christmas.
Dickens' timeless story combines social criticism with a moving message about kindness, compassion and the possibility of a new beginning. Since its publication, it has been adapted numerous times for theatre, film and opera.
